LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN {BILL MURRAY, BILLY JOEL} {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The premiere of this series of late-night talk shows hosted by David Letterman. This program features actor Bill Murray and singer/songwriter Billy Joel, with surprise appearances by news anchor Tom Brokaw and actor Paul Newman. In his monologue, Letterman jokes about NBC's claim to the "intellectual property" of his previous show, "Late Night with David Letterman," and Tom Brokaw stops by to claim Letterman's cue cards on behalf of NBC. In other highlights, Letterman presents a humorous videotape about the extensive renovation of the Ed Sullivan Theater, where the show is taped; the construction workers involved in the renovation come out en masse to take a bow; Letterman "conjures" the spirit of Ed Sullivan; and Paul Newman appears in the audience and asks, "Where the hell are the singing cats?" Bill Murray offers Letterman name tags to wear on his suit and spray-paints the name "Dave" on the front of his desk so that people will know who he is; in a segment taped in a New Jersey suburb, Letterman asks residents what they would like to see on his new show; and Billy Joel performs the song "No Man's Land" and talks about the impact of seeing the Beatles perform on "The Ed Sullivan Show," broadcast from that very theater.
