Summary

This drama tells the story of an East German couple, Rudolf and Katharina, whose lives are disrupted by a surprise visit from an old friend and classmate, Robert, on their 25th wedding anniversary. Katharina was in love with both Robert and Rudolf when all three were university students during the turbulent 1960's. When she became pregnant, she tried to marry both men in an attempt to defy the bourgeoisie, but the law disallowed the unorthodox marriage. Unbeknownst to Katharina, the two men agreed that they would take turns being married to her: Rudolf would be her husband for 25 years, and then Robert would have his turn. Robert, who spent most of the intervening years living in the West, arrives punctually to claim his bride on the day of the couple's silver wedding anniversary, causing chaos in the household and forcing the three to re-evaluate their past decisions and their futures.
