Summary
This special celebrates talk show host Joe Franklin's fortieth year on television. The program features footage of celebrity guests at an anniversary gala held in Franklin's honor at New York's Club "21" restaurant; one-on-one interviews that Franklin recently taped with celebrities in California; and clips from the long run of "The Joe Franklin Show." Taped segments from Franklin's recent Hollywood visit include the following: an interview with Billy Crystal, who performs a little of his famous Joe Franklin impersonation; a visit with Milton Berle at his Beverly Hills home; a tour of Rudy Vallee's house with fitness guru Jack LaLanne; an interview with Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., who talks about the founding of United Artists; a discussion with Valerie Harper about the innovations of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in situation comedy production; a chat with Dick Clark; an interview with Bob Hope, who talks about working with Bing Crosby; a spirited conversation among Cesar Romero, Edie Adams, Cornel Wilde, Corinne Calvet, and Henry Brandon at Mateo's Restaurant; and lunch with Telly Savalas, who discusses his days as a radio director. Other highlights include braying comedian Gilbert Gottfried touring Franklin's memorabilia-packed New York offices; a clip from a 1957 interview Franklin conducted with actor Sessue Hayakawa; a clip from a recent show with guest Bill Cosby; a one-on-one talk with Phyllis Diller; a visit to the Friar's Club with Franklin, Joey Adams, Henny Youngman, and others; and footage from a 1976 program with Bing Crosby. Throughout the program, guests at "21" and famous friends in California congratulate Franklin on his many years in show business. Commercials deleted.
