HALLMARK HALL OF FAME: THE HANDS OF CORMAC JOYCE (TV)

Summary

One in this series of dramatic specials presented by Hallmark. In this production, set in an Aran Islands fishing village off the Irish coast, the Joyce family and their neighbors prepare for a massive storm. Young Jackie Joyce idolizes his father, Cormac, whom he accompanies on fishing trips; and he prays to St. Brendan that his hands will someday be as strong as his father's. Recently the fish have been very scarce and people sense that something ominous is on its way. Something ominous arrives in the form of a powerful tempest, and the villagers prepare to be evacuated to the mainland by the coast guard. Cormac, a native islander, is determined to stay and fight to save his house and boat, though his wife Mollie says this is foolish and prideful. Jackie begs his father to let him stay and help, especially after Cormac's hand is badly injured, but he refuses. After a bitter argument in which Cormac angrily reminds Mollie that she is not from the islands and therefore cannot understand him, she prepares to board the coast guard ship with Jackie. At the last minute she decides to stay, and returns with Jackie to the house. As the storm nears, Mollie and Cormac rediscover their love for each other, with Mollie allowing her vulnerability to surface and Cormac regaining his sense of humor. When the storm finally hits, and torrents of sea water smash through windows and doors, Jackie is called on to use all his strength in order to help save his family and their home. Commercials deleted.
