LIFESTORIES: FAMILIES IN CRISIS: MORE THAN FRIENDS: THE COMING OUT OF HEIDI LEITER (TV)
Summary
One in this series of socially conscious docudramas presented by HBO. In this program, teenager Heidi Leiter starts an intimate relationship with her girlfriend Missy. Her parents respond by taking her to see a psychiatrist, who tries to explain that the girl's sexual orientation is not something that needs to be fixed. Heidi then decides to ask Missy to go to the prom with her. Heidi's parents worry about the repercussions this will have on her life, her sister becomes concerned about her own reputation, and her friends suddenly do not wish to be associated with her. Even after two young men beat up Missy for being a "dyke," the couple resolve to go to the prom in defiance of community disapproval. The story is told in a series of flashbacks which Heidi recalls on the way to a talk show on which she and Missy are going to appear. Clips of the talk show are interspersed with footage of events at the prom. Also, at the end of the program the real Heidi Leiter speaks directly to the viewing audience about why she decided to be so public about this part of her life.
