COUSTEAU'S REDISCOVERY OF THE WORLD: THE DANUBE REDISCOVERED, PT. 3: THE RIVER CRIES OUT (TV)
Summary
One in this irregularly scheduled documentary series that follows the marine explorations of Jacques Cousteau and the crew of the Calypso. In part three of this four-part program, Cousteau and his team of divers, geologists, and marine biologists explore various sections of the Danube, Europe's second-longest river. Ranging from brisk cascades to dormant marshes, the Danube provides the Calypso crew with a vast range of natural phenomena to observe, including a lake that petrifies all of its contents, covering them with a limestone glaze that creates a haunting visual effect. Crew members interview local fisherman along the Danube and swim with catfish in the basin en route to the Danube River Delta, Europe's largest wetland and the place where the Danube's 120 tributaries end their journey, carrying with them industrial pollution from eight different European countries. A small team of Cousteau's explorers venture into the delta's thick terrain in search of local birdlife while divers swim with rare species of fish. Other highlights include footage of breaking though a frozen stretch of river in Hungary, herds of boar travelling through nearby forests, and bears frolicking in Romanian mountains. Commercials deleted. (The other three parts of this four-part program are not currently part of the Museum's collection.)
