CHANGING STEPS {MERCE CUNNINGHAM AND JOHN CAGE} (TV)
Summary
Produced especially for television and videotaped in 1988 in West Germany, New York, and Utah, this program blends two performances of choreographer Merce Cunningham's 1973 piece, "Changing Steps": a black-and-white version filmed in 1974 and a performance at the Sundance Institute in 1989. Choreographed to John Cage's "Cartridge Music," the piece includes a solo dance for each member of the company, five duets, three trios, two quartets and two quintets. Performed at both indoor and outdoor locations, the dances alternate and often overlap. Robert Redford provides introductory narration. (This program aired under the umbrella of "New Television," a series that began airing nationally on PBS in 1990.)
