BARBARA WALTERS SPECIAL, THE {ELTON JOHN, MEG RYAN, STEVEN SPIELBERG} (TV)
Summary
One in this occasional series of interview specials, hosted by Barbara Walters. The guests for this show are singer Elton John, actress Meg Ryan, and filmmaker Steven Spielberg. In the first segment, Elton John discusses the following topics, among others: when he started playing the piano, how his writing partner Bernie Taupin became associated with him, whether the outrageousness of his stage presence has faded, why he got married in the 1980s, how his drug and alcohol abuse destroyed everything but his career, if he is comfortable with his homosexuality, the efforts he made to help Michael Jackson with some recent problems. He then plays the songs which remind him of the different stages in his life. In the next segment, Meg Ryan talks about the recent earthquake that hit Los Angeles, her boxoffice smash "Sleepless in Seattle," whether her husband Dennis Quaid is her destiny, her parents divorce when she was fifteen years old, why she turned down a number of roles in what turned out to be successful films and instead chose roles in films that bombed, and how she views her life up to this point. In the final segment, Steven Spielberg discusses the following topics, among others: how characters in his movies are often his alter-ego, why he made the Oscar-nominated "Schindler's List" for his mother, how it feels to finally have the critics praise him, whether or not he thinks he deserves the Oscar for directing "Schindler's List," what it meant being Jewish when he was a child, the anti-Semitism he encountered after he moved to California in his teenage years, the effect the divorce of his parents has had on his work, what the best and worst times of his life have been, and exactly what the next movie project will be for him. Includes commercials and promos. This program is closed-captioned.
