SWORDQUEST {ROLE-PLAYING GAME ON QUBE} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of interactive fantasy television programs. This program, telecast on the interactive Qube system on Warner Amex Cable, encourages home viewers to collectively participate in the story, which is modeled after the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons. Viewers choose from three options, and the tabulated results determine the course of events. First, the host provides illustrations and descriptions of four characters, and then encourages viewers to choose one. Viewers select Boris as the lead character, and the camera displays his point of view within a miniature set of a castle. The host, assuming Boris's identity, conducts light-hearted banter with the arch-magician Diva, who reveals the game's ultimate mission: to find two magical swords in Castle LaRoche. Viewers choose to have Boris participate in the following activities: visit an ill-fated gypsy; travel to the land of Bogsor; enter a castle without lighting a torch, resulting in a bat attack and a reduction of hit points; combat ogres, represented by tiny figurines; search beneath a slimy grate, where he finds keys; decipher a scroll that releases a levitation spell; and fight and kill a chimera -- part dragon and part wolf -- represented by a figurine. With only seven hit points, Boris discovers a secret locked room, and upon the viewers' instructions, unlocks the door and finds a chest of jewels, as well as a scroll describing the next episode of the swordquest. As the program concludes, viewers have the chance to access more information about the character, terrain, or the game itself. This selection from the Alan Gerry Cable Collection has been made available by the Gerry Foundation, Inc.
