20/20: THE STATE VS. O.J. SIMPSON (TV)

Summary

One in this series of news magazine programs. This program, hosted by Hugh Downs, examines the last day in the preliminary murder trial of O.J. Simpson. This program includes interviews and comments from a panel of legal experts including Catherine Crier, Peter Arenella, Leslie Abramson, Robert Philibosian, and Cynthia McFadden, as well as reports from reporters Lynn Sherr and Tom Jarriel. Topics discussed include the following: the gruesome nature of the testimony of chief medical examiner Dr. Irwin Golden about the details of the murders; the nicks on the spinal column of one of the victims, indicating an extremely violent attack; the number of defense wounds that were found on the victims' bodies; reactions from the victims' family members during the testimony; the reason the defense avoided questions about stab wounds and instead preferred to question Dr. Golden about procedures leading up to and during autopsies; blood stains leading away from the crime scene that do not match the victims' blood; points that were stressed during the closing arguments; and Judge Kathleen Kennedy-Powell's decision to move the trial to a superior court. The panel of legal experts then comments on the following topics: the major differences between this murder trial and other high-profile trials; whether the scales of justice have been balanced throughout the preliminary trial; the plans of the defense and prosecution teams between the trials; whether the defense will push for a speedy trial because of the holes in the prosecution's case; what, if any, surprises will be revealed by both legal teams at the next trial; the way Dr. Golden's testimony may affect the case; and whether the defense will put Simpson on the stand to testify. The last segment of the program features actor and author Ben Stein, who discusses the effects of this trial on the public's craving for scandals involving celebrities. Includes commercials and promos. This program is closed-captioned.
