CRIME STORY: THE SENATOR, THE MOVIE STAR AND THE MOB {SECOND SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
Second-season premiere of this serialized police drama -- set for the initial episodes in Chicago, then in Las Vegas, during the early 1960s -- which traces the intersecting lives of three men: Agent Mike Torello, the hard-boiled, hair-triggered leader of a Justice Department task force; Ray Luca, a ruthless gangster overseeing a vast criminal empire; and David Abrams, a tenacious U.S. Attorney. In this episode, Torello and his squad provide protection for an organized-crime commission convened by a crusading senator. As the story unfolds, a funeral is held for Luca and Paulie, who disappeared in an atomic blast near a nuclear testing facility in the desert. Within the Outfit, a power struggle ensues for Luca's vacant chair, with New York mobster Carlo Mastrangelo seizing the opportunity to become the heir apparent. His future secured by old-line kingpin Manny Weisbord, Mastrangelo sets about discrediting the reputation of Senator Rourke, who has vowed to blow the whistle on the Outfit's infiltration of the casinos. Meanwhile, Torello finds himself seduced by a mysterious, yet troubled starlet named Pamela Palmer, and Nate Grossman's escalating gambling problem, carefully abetted by Mastrangelo, threatens to crumble the integrity of the strike force.
