CRIME STORY: THE KINGDOM OF MONEY (TV)

Summary

One in this serialized police drama -- set for the initial episodes in Chicago, then in Las Vegas, during the early 1960s -- which traces the intersecting lives of three men: Agent Mike Torello, the hard-boiled, hair-triggered leader of a Justice Department task force; Ray Luca, a ruthless gangster overseeing a vast criminal empire; and David Abrams, a tenacious U.S. Attorney. As this episode begins, Luca has seized control of the Lucky Star Casino and is in the process of reorganizing its accounting procedures in a manner guaranteed to yield a maximum, albeit illegal, profit. As carried out by Max Goldman and Paulie, Luca's plan is to skim fifty percent of the take from the slot machines; the rest of the money will fold over and legitimize the business. Secure in his new kingdom, Luca acquires a large house with a pool; sets up a pricey mistress in a penthouse over the city; and generally ignores the advice of his consigliere to lead a quiet, low-key life. Across town, Torello and his men, freshly deputized as U.S. Marshals, set up their crime-fighting operation in a dingy, confiscated motel; from here they will work in conjunction with Abrams's legal team in building a solid case against Luca and the Outfit. Barely unpacked and without a wink of sleep, Torello barges into the Lucky Star and confronts Luca with his new Justice Department shield, assuring the gangster that this signifies the end of his criminal career. But the appearance of a brutal loan shark -- an associate of Luca's named Al Vicente -- diverts Torello's efforts to the case of small-time gambler and big-time loser Bill Davis, whose "loan" from Vicente has blossomed into a colossal IOU. Despite the nightly beatings he receives at the hands of Vicente's thugs, Davis initially refuses to cooperate with the task force; friendly persuasion from Torello changes his mind. As the task force sets a trap for Vicente, Davis commits a small, inconceivable error which may jeopardize his life. Commercials deleted.
