MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO SEMINAR SERIES, THE: THIRTY YEARS OF ANOTHER WORLD {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in this series of seminars conducted by The Museum of Television & Radio. In this seminar, moderated by the museum's television curator Ron Simon, members of the cast and production team of "Another World," discuss the past, present, and future of the long-running daytime serial. Simon begins the evening with a screening of clips from the series (created by Irna Phillips and William J. Bell), including footage from its first season in 1964; footage of actor Ray Liotta in 1979; and a 1993 special presentation entitled "Murder on the Honeymoon Express" which places the residents of Bay City on the Orient Express in the 1920s. Next, Simon introduces the following panelists: actors Victoria Wyndham, Charles Keating, Linda Dano, Stephen Schnetzer, and Grayson McCouch; executive producer Terri Guarnieri; head writer Carolyn Culliton; and director Linda Barker Laundra. The panel discusses the following topics: the evolution of the various characters; the creation and growth of the "Rachel/Carl" romantic storyline; the responsibility of the writers and producers to the history of the show in developing storylines; how the writing of the show has changed over the years; the roles of the producer and director; the demands of a medium that emphasizes speed of production to a much greater degree than film or nighttime television; and working on a serial compared with working in the theater or prime-time television. Questions from the audience lead to comments on the following topics, among others: whether the series plans to develop storylines involving gay and lesbian characters; the high quality of writing and acting in the "Felicia Gallant" alcoholism storyline; problems of the viewer ratings system in assessing serial viewership; whether there will be more African-American characters on the show; whether there will be characters represented who are veterans of recent conflicts, such as the Persian Gulf War; whether the audience favors plot and issue-driven stories or character/relationship-driven stories; the difficulties of recasting characters in serials; press coverage of "Another World"; and the great elasticity of the serial medium, which allows actors and writers -- and audience members -- to have a say in the development of characters and storylines. To end the seminar, a screening is presented of a brief music video which reviews the past thirty years of "Another World."
