NEW YORK CITY MARATHON, 1994 {EDITED VERSION} (TV)

Summary

This television special features edited coverage of the Twenty-Fifth-Anniversary 1994 New York City Marathon. Jim McKay reports from the starting line of this twenty-six-and-two-tenths-mile race, which winds through all five boroughs of New York City. McKay pays particular homage to Fred Lebow, the creator of the race, who has recently passed away. New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani triggers the start of the race, and the runners begin their course over the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. Immediately attention is turned to the men leading the race, including Vincent Rousseau. Commentators identify some of the favorites, and the program highlights a few marathon winners from the past. A segment on Rousseau is shown, including an interview during which he discusses the ideal weather conditions for a race. Back in New York City, Luis Carlos DaSilva is leading at mile eight. In continuing coverage, a tight five-man pack leads. A compilation of marathon history footage is shown, highlighting multiple-time winners of marathons. Next, Pattisue Plumer reports from mile seventeen on the progress of the women who are leading the race. In the men's lead, there remain five runners: Arturo Barrios, German Silva, Domingos Castro, William Koech, and Benjamin Paredes. At mile nineteen, Tecla Lorupe leads the women. Plumer notes that the women have really picked up their pace. A segment highlights Fred Lebow, the founder of the marathon, who was stricken with brain cancer in 1990 and died in 1994. McKay reports on Lebow and provides details of his life. At mile twenty-five, Silva and Paredes lead among the men, and Lorupe is far ahead of the other women. Suddenly, Larry Rawson reports that Silva has taken a wrong turn into Central Park with about five hundred yards left in the race. After getting himself back on track, he overtakes Paredes to win the race. Paredes comes in second, with Arturo Barrios in third. Silva is interviewed about his victory, and the focus returns to the women's race. Lorupe comes in first, with Madina Biktagirova second and Anne Marie Letko third. Lorupe is interviewed, and McKay looks back to the rest of the 25,000 runners, some of whom will be running until long after dark. In the final analysis, he suggests, the story of a marathon is too big to be told. Includes commercials and promos. This program is closed-captioned.

Cataloging of this program was made possible by The Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation.
