ALL MY CHILDREN 25TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL (TV)

Summary

This prime-time special, hosted by "All My Children" fan and occasional cast member Carol Burnett, presents a look back at twenty-five years of this daytime serial about the lives and loves of the residents of Pine Valley, Pennsylvania. Highlights include the following: Burnett discusses how "All My Children" ushered in a new era in soap operas when it premiered in 1970, with story lines focusing on young people and social issues; and she recalls how she got hooked on the series in 1975. Burnett interviews series creator Agnes Nixon, who discusses the series' first pair of teen lovers, Phil and Tara. The actors who portrayed the young couple, Richard Hatch and Karen Gorney, reflect on their relationship in taped segments. Burnett then interviews several other popular "AMC" couples: Taylor Miller and Peter Bergman (Nina and Cliff), Kim Delaney and Laurence Lau (Jenny and Greg), Debbi Morgan and Darnell Williams (Angie and Jesse), and Sydney Penny and Keith Hamilton Cobb (Julia and Noah). Next, Burnett chats with the following veteran cast members: Susan Lucci (Erica) talks about what really motivates her immensely popular character; Mary Fickett and Ray MacDonnell (Joe and Ruth Martin) discuss the continuity of the generations in Pine Valley; Ruth Warrick (Phoebe) comments on the public's interest in her trouble-making character; James Mitchell (Palmer) discusses Palmer's special relationship with Daisy; David Canary (twins Adam and Stuart) recalls the development of the Stuart character and Stuart's relationship with Cindy, who died of AIDS; Michael E. Knight (Tad) addresses his character's misspent youth; and Julia Barr, (Brooke) relates how she played a scene in which Brooke learned of her daughter's death in a drunk-driving accident. Burnett later introduces the following segments: a look back at the series' groundbreaking treatment of Mark's drug-abuse problem; bloopers from seasons past; and another conversation with Agnes Nixon, who comments on the importance of humor in the series. Burnett next lives her fantasy -- she plays Erica Kane, spliced into various scenes with Erica's lovers. Additionally, a running segment throughout the program features clips of celebrities who have appeared on the serial: Carol Burnett and Elizabeth Taylor (1983), Christian Slater (juvenile, 1984), Stevie Wonder (1986), Oprah Winfrey (1983), and Dom DeLuise (1991). Also includes footage of all of the above cast members as well as the following in clips from the series: Dorothy Lyman, Michael Nader, Eileen Herlie, Frances Heflin, Larry Keith, Richard Shoberg, Lee Godart, Jean LeClerc, Walt Willey, Larkin Malloy, Kay Campbell, Gillian Spencer, Ellen Wheeler, Marcy Walker, Mark LaMura, Kathleen Noone, and Grant Aleksander. This program is closed-captioned.
