SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE, PART 6 OF 6: IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT IN A DARK HOUSE SOMEWHERE IN THE WORLD {SCENER UR ETT AKTENSKAP: MITT I NATTEN I ETT MORKT HUS NAGONSTANS I VARLDEN} {SWEDISH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES} / THE WORLD OF INGMAR BERGMAN: KNOWLEDGE (TV)
Summary
Continued from T:36053. Part six and the conclusion of the first subtitled American broadcast of this Swedish dramatic miniseries, written and directed by Ingmar Bergman, which was originally broadcast in Sweden in 1973. This program surveys the emotional devastation of Mariann and Johan, whose ostensibly perfect marriage deteriorates into bitterness and divorce. Each of the six parts features an introduction by actress Liv Ullmann and concludes with a segment of an interview with Bergman (extracted from Jorn Donner's documentary film, "Three Scenes with Ingmar Bergman," and retitled "The World of Ingmar Bergman" for U.S. television broadcast), subtitled in English. In this episode, set years after their divorce, both Marianne and Johan are remarried but are having an affair with one another. As the program begins, Marianne visits her mother, who has recently lost her husband. Marianne's mother confides her many regrets over her lack of communication with Marianne's father -- describing, in a sense, the marriage Johan and Marianne would have had if they had stayed together. Meanwhile, Johan summarily dismisses his latest lover -- his old friend and colleague Eva -- and suggests he is in love with another woman. He happily calls Marianne and sets up a rendezvous. During a weekend together in the country, Marianne and Johan discuss how each has changed and made self-discoveries: She has gained confidence and realized her own strength and joy in living; he has learned humility and has become more vulnerable and receptive. With a relaxed warmth and candor, they discuss their past and present, and seek a resolution to their fears about love. In this portion of "The World of Ingmar Bergman," Bergman discusses the point at which he finally felt he had control of the film medium and was able to truly express himself; his admiration for the work of Fellini and Peter Bogdanovich; and the reasons he feels film and theatre are important art forms.
[PBS ran two versions of this miniseries concurrently in March and April of 1977. A dubbed version debuted on Wednesday, March 9, 1977, and ran for the next five consecutive Wednesdays. (See: T:18412-T:18417.) This subtitled version premiered on Saturday March 12, 1977, and ran for the next five consecutive Saturdays. "The World of Ingmar Bergman" segments, however, are subtitled in both versions.]
