MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO'S 12TH ANNUAL TELEVISION FESTIVAL IN LOS ANGELES , THE: AN EVENING WITH JONATHAN WINTERS {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of evenings and special screenings presented as part of The Museum of Television & Radio's 12th Annual Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Directors Guild of America Theatre Complex, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television, and is dedicated to television's creative community.

This evening honors comedian Jonathan Winters. Museum president Robert M. Batscha introduces Winters, who entertains the audience by discussing various topics including having the flu, being pulled over by the police for speeding, and his relationship with his wife. Then Winters introduces a highlight tape which contains clips of his appearances on the following programs: "Person to Person" (1958); "The Jonathan Winters Show" (1956); "The Steve Allen Show" (1958); "The Jack Paar Program" (1964); "A Wild Winters Night" (1964); "The Jonathan Winters Show" (1965 and 1967); "The Jackie Gleason Show" (1953); a Hefty trash bag commercial (1975); "The Winging World of Jonathan Winters" (1965); "The World of Jonathan Winters" (1965); "Norman Rockwell's America" (1969); "Mork & Mindy" (1981); "Jonathan Winters & Friends" (1989); and "Davis Rules" (1991). Afterwards, Winters talks about his appearance in a Nescafe commercial on "The Jackie Gleason Show," how he became an improvisational performer, and his habit of talking to himself.

Then audience questions lead Winters to comment on the following topics, among others: the curse of versatility; his experiences on "The Jack Paar Show"; working with Johnny Carson; the comedians who have had an influence on his work; the meaning of life; the realities of show business; his views on religion; working with Boris Karloff; the importance of humor in a marriage; why he remained a virgin throughout high school; what prompted him to join the Marines; and his views on political correctness and television talk shows.
