PICKET FENCES: SQUATTER'S RIGHTS (TV)

Summary

One in this series of offbeat dramas that often focuses on social issues as it chronicles the lives of Rome, Wisconsin, residents, including town Sheriff Jimmy Brock; his wife Dr. Jill Brock; their three children Kimberly, Matthew, and Zachary; and his two deputies Kenny Lacos and Maxine Stewart. In this episode, Mort Wallace is found dead in his home from what appears to be cardiac arrest. Dr. Carter examines the body and has a feeling something is not right about Mort's death. Carter tells Jimmy that Mort may have been suffocated and comes up with evidence which proves that. Jimmy and Maxine question Mort's obese wife, Sophie, about her husband's death, and Sophie admits that she killed Mort by sitting on his head while he was asleep. However, Maxine has a problem with Sophie's confession and the fact that she has rejected any sort of representation from a lawyer. Meanwhile, Douglas Wambaugh talks about Mort at the memorial service and Rabbi Levin tells Wambaugh that he is losing his membership to the synagogue. Wambaugh plans to battle Levin in front of a Jewish group which represents a court of law. Jill tries to talk with Sophie about her course of action, but she is too stubborn to listen, and Maxine requests a lie detector test for Sophie. In the meantime, Wambaugh pleads his case in front of the religious board, and when all hope seems lost, Kimberly speaks on his behalf. The lie detector test results show another little twist in this murder case, and when Jill tries to talk with Sophie again she finally makes a connection with her. Ultimately, the verdicts for Sophie and for Wambaugh come through. Commercials deleted.
