MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO, THE: MICHAEL SPORN ANIMATION WORKSHOP {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in this series of workshops sponsored by the education department at The Museum of Television & Radio in New York. Museum educator Dina Consolini introduces Michael Sporn, producer and animator of several short films for the PBS series "Long Ago and Far Away," including "The Talking Eggs," which the Museum screens during the workshop. Sporn explains that "The Talking Eggs" is an updated and animated story based on a Creole folk tale about a wicked stepmother with two identical daughters whom she does not love equally. When the hated stepdaughter finds a magic cottage and talking eggs that turn to gold, the greedy stepmother sends her own beloved daughter in search of more eggs, only to find that the magic has a dark side for the undeserving. Sporn asks the participants to pay attention to the way in which the tale was updated, and Consolini directs their notice to the three classic elements of folk tales: magic, good-versus-evil characters, and a moral.

After the screening, Sporn discusses the way in which he and film writer Maxine Fisher updated the script. Next, he demonstrates the process of creating an animated movie with an enlarged storyboard from the film. Consolini then urges the members of the group to discuss their reactions to the movie. Next, participants ask questions of Sporn, discussing the program's broadcast information, the intended age range of viewers, and the length of the development process from the original idea to the final product. Sporn then lays out the process of making the film after the storyboard is complete -- from the recording of voices and filming and editing of the storyboard to the animation of the characters and the filming of individual animation cells. Sporn invites the participants to ask questions, and topics discussed include: the movie's budget, Sporn's other projects, this version's similarities to and differences from the original tale, Sporn's interest in social issues, and his advice to those interested in a career in animation.

("The Talking Eggs" is part of the Museum's collection and is also available for viewing separately. See T:35245 for summary.)
