Summary
This program documents the grass roots political efforts of anti-abortion groups in Illinois during the 1976 local, state, and national elections, and their attempts to elect candidates who are amenable to their cause. It contains footage of anti-abortion campaign workers planning strategy, attempting to attract politicians to their cause, and actively canvassing for support. Highlights include the following: right-to-life stategist Joseph Scheidler shows the slide presentation he presents to politicians he hopes to sway to the pro-life movement; a look at how the pro-life forces have affected the Illinois gubernatorial election between Jim tt; an examination of how the Cook County congressional elections have been affected by the abortion issue; how 6th District Republican incumbent Rep. Henry Hyde sponsored a bill that eliminated Medicaid funding for abortions for women on welfare; footage of a speech on abortion by 10th District Republican hopeful Sam Young; footage of abortion opponents working for candidates in state legislative races; a retort from the Rev. E. Spencer Parsons of the Illinois Chapter of the National Abortion Rights Action League, who lashes out at the political lobbying of the anti-abortion movement; the Catholic Church's involvement in Illinois elections; and statistics from a poll which attempted to gauge the feelings of Illinois voters on the abortion issue.
