Summary
One in this series of programs on people and issues in the political and cultural forefront. In this program, Bill Moyers examines the state of the economy in Detroit. Highlights and topics of discussion include the following: how Detroit is struggling to survive; the setbacks the automobile industry has endured due to government policies; a brief overview of the nation's economic problems of the past decade; Moyers talks with many auto industry workers in and out of the plants about their feelings; concern over the welfare of the workers' families; clips of the Senate Banking Committee hearing in 1979, when Lee Iacocca, head of the Chrysler Corporation, made his plea for government-funded financial assistance; how Chrysler began to flourish again after the bailout; continuing unemployment in Detroit and its effect on laid-off workers; why many American plants are closing down and moving overseas; the urge for the public and private sectors to start working together on solutions; and proposals for economic democracy in auto plants. Includes interviews with auto industry workers.
