PRIMETIME LIVE {MILITIAMEN; THE BELIEVERS; JOHN DOE #1} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of news magazine co-anchored by Diane Sawyer and Sam Donaldson. This special report focuses on militia activity in the U.S., and on the people responsible for the bombing of the Federal Building in Oklahoma City. First, chief investigative correspondent Brian Ross explores Timothy McVeigh's involvement with the militia and speaks with Senate Judiciary Chairman Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) about future FBI investigations of potential conspiracies. In the first segment, "Militiamen," Donaldson interviews two ex-militia members who have informed the government about "Patriot" activities; they discuss the extremist, anti-government views of certain reactionary groups and the actions they are planning. Donaldson also interviews Michigan Militia leader Mark Koernke, who comments on the following ideas: the militia groups' fight against government tyranny and the erosion of the Constitution and Bill of Rights; whether the Michigan group was planning an attack on a Kansas military base; the Oklahoma City bombing; and the international conspiracy to establish a new world order. In the segment, "The Believers," Sawyer examines militia members' perceptions of President George Bush's speech about a "new world order," Congressional debates on gun control, and the 1993 FBI raid on the Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas. This segment includes clips of several anti-government videos by activists such as Bob Fletcher and Linda Thompson, as well as footage of the raid on the Branch Davidians at Waco, and interviews with two militia leaders. In "John Doe #1," Renee Poussaint provides a biographical sketch of Timothy McVeigh by speaking with people who knew him, including a priest, teacher, former co-worker, and an acquaintance. In the final segment, John Qui–ones memorializes the children who were victims of the Oklahoma city bombing. In addition to photos and home videos of the children who were killed in the bombing, the segment features interviews with the parents of children who were killed or injured in the bombing, and with child care workers from the America's Kids Daycare Center. Includes a preview of "Nightline" with Ted Koppel. Includes commercials, promos, and public service announcements. This program is closed-captioned.
