CHICAGO HOPE: SHUTT DOWN (TV)

Summary

One in this series of medical dramas about the personal and professional lives of the staff of the state-of-the-art Chicago Hope Hospital and the ethical dilemmas they face. In this episode, the following events occur: Dr. Karen Antonovich joins the staff; a young boy named Marcus Lavelle is brought to emergency by his parents when his legs go numb after a minor bicycle spill; a teenage gang member named Antoine Metcalf enters the emergency room and opens fire with an automatic weapon in an act of retribution against a another gang member; Metcalf shoots Dr. Daniel Nyland, Marcus's mother, and a security guard until he is finally stopped by another guard who shoots him in the head; Dr. Aaron Shutt is sent to perform brain surgery on Metcalf, and during surgery, Shutt openly expresses his hostility towards the teen, at one point joking that he could easily kill him with one slight movement; Geiger operates on Mrs. April Lavelle; Metcalf dies in post-op and Shutt is troubled by his own lack of feeling over the loss of a patient; Dr. Antonovich discovers that Marcus has a congenital vein malformation in his legs and advises an operation; Shutt is hostile at a review meeting and says he's not sure he did his best for Metcalf; Metcalf's family files a lawsuit against Shutt; hospital lawyer Alan Birch attempts to prep Shutt for a lawsuit hearing and grows angry when he perceives Shutt as self-pitying and uncooperative; Nurse Camille Shutt struggles with her new role as ex-wife, fighting her impulse to reach out to the troubled Aaron; though Dr. Antonovich's operation on Marcus Lavelle appears to have been a success, the boy comes out of it paralyzed; as the hearing draws near, Shutt begins to behave irresponsibly, missing and cancelling scheduled procedures -- and his colleagues each attempt to help him; Dr. Watters believes that Marcus's paralysis is psychological -- the result of seeing his mother shot -- and psychiatrist Dr. Ray Kadalski, and doctors Geiger and Antonovich attempt to coax the boy to move his legs, but ultimately it is Shutt who holds the key. Commercials deleted. Includes scenes from previous episodes at the beginning of the program.
