MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 {"WHY STUDY INDUSTRIAL ARTS" AND "THE SKYDIVERS"} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of comedy programs about lab technician Mike Nelson and his robot friends, Tom Servo and Crow, who are trapped in space by the evil scientist Dr. Clayton Forrester and forced to watch the worst movies ever made as part of a twisted experiment. Mike and the "bots" are seen from behind in silhouette as they comment on these dreadful productions during screenings. In this edition, the space cineastes watch a 1956 educational film called "Why Study Industrial Arts," which tells the story of Joe, a high school student who really, really likes shop class but is embarrassed to share this with his basketball team buddies. Joe feels vindicated, however, after a talk with his industrial arts teacher who informs him of the many varied career opportunities open to one skilled in the industrial arts; and later, the basketball coach reveals to Joe and the team that he too really liked shop class, and that it has taught him many remodeling skills that he employs in his suburban ranch house. The feature film for the evening is "The Skydivers," a 1963 movie written and directed by Coleman Francis, involving a husband-and-wife owned skydiving outfit closed down by the FAA after a diver dies in a jump. In the middle there's a bikini party with a bunch of nubile teens twisting to the music of Jimmy Bryant and His Night Jumpers; and near the end of the film, the husband gets killed when his disgruntled ex-girlfriend, Suzy, arranges to have acid poured on his parachute before a jump. Comedy bits include the following: Crow ruins Tom Servo's highfalutin planetarium show with vulgar Uranus jokes; Dr. Forrester and TV's Frank challenge Mike, Servo, Gypsy, and Crow to a swing choir contest; Crow accidentally immobilizes himself with a jockstrap while attempting to test the "double-jock-lock," a locker-room torture inflicted upon the unathletic; Servo machine guns a small roadster Crow has just waxed; and Mike reads a letter from a viewer. Commercials deleted.

(This series also aired on the Sci-Fi Channel from 1997 to 1999.)
