60 MINUTES {SOMALIA; LARRY KING; JORGE MASCANOSA} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of news magazine programs. This edition includes a report on the famine in Somalia, a conversation with talk show host Larry King, and a profile of Cuban-American leader Jorge Mas Canosa. In "Hell on Earth," Ed Bradley travels to Somalia with a U.S. cargo plane and witnesses local gunmen seizing a large portion of the food that was being delivered to aid the starving. These gunmen later make a profit by selling this food to merchants. After Bradley observes the actions of the gunmen, he speaks with the following individuals: a worker from an Irish relief organization, who comments on the fatalities in Somalia and on the slow healing process that the malnourished undergo; a local priest who blames the disaster in Somalia on fighting warlords and on the toppling of the dictator in Somalia; a human rights organization leader who believes that the country's cache of weapons, which is a legacy of the Cold War, is to blame for conditions in Somalia; Australian CARE workers who describe the country's situation as a breakdown of law and order; a volunteer with the international medical corps who refers to the proliferation of gunshot victims; a United Nations representative who describes his efforts to compel the UN to supply troops to Somalia in order to ensure that the needy receive aid; and Irish President Mary Robinson, who explains why she visited Somalia. Next, Mike Wallace visits with Larry King, who has become a household name. King talks about being a celebrity and theorizes that he lands hard-to-get interviews because he asks simple questions and makes people feel comfortable. King recalls his close involvement in H. Ross Perot's disclosure of his bid for the presidency and the resulting boost to his (King's) own career. After discussing his interviewing style, King discusses his financial fiasco in Miami years earlier, his decision to take off his jacket during interviews, and the saga of his relationships with women. In the next segment, "Se–or Presidente?," Steve Kroft profiles Miami millionaire Jorge Mas Canosa, the self-appointed leader of Cubans in exile, who is awaiting the overthrow of Fidel Castro. Kroft recounts the accomplishments of Mas Canosa, who organized fellow exiles into a powerful political organization -- The Cuban American National Foundation. Mas Canosa courted Boris Yeltsin, thus effectively ending Russian support to Castro. Kroft questions Mas Canosa about his plans to be the next president of Cuba, and speaks with Miami business leaders (including Miami Herald publisher David Lawrence) about allegations that Mas Canosa uses fear tactics and ruthlessness to achieve his goals. Finally, Andy Rooney comments on his boredom with the presidential debates and the baseball play-off games on television. Includes commercials. Commercials include Lee Iacocca for Chrysler automobiles, and Bob Vila for Sears department stores.

Cataloging of this program was made possible by the Bell Atlantic Foundation, 2000.
