PLAYHOUSE 90: THE FABULOUS IRISHMAN (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic anthology series. Eddie Cantor introduces this true biographical drama which chronicles the life and career of Robert Briscoe (played by Art Carney), from his days as an Irish revolutionary to his political eminence as the first Jewish Lord Mayor of Dublin, Ireland. Born in Ireland, though not of Irish blood, Robert Briscoe (1894-1969) joins the Sinn Fein movement and the Irish Republic Army in 1917. As an Irish revolutionary, he helps his comrades in arms smuggle weapons and ammunition into Ireland from Germany. Wanted by the English, Briscoe is forced to leave his hometown. When peace between the Irish and the English is declared, Briscoe is elated until he learns that the peace is really between the conservative Irish and the British. He fears that there will soon be civil war and returns to his homeland. When a notice is posted stating that he is to be shot on sight, Briscoe leaves Ireland accompanied by two others from the I.R.A. and journeys to America where he takes over the Irish consulate for five days. Soon after, amnesty is proclaimed in Ireland. Briscoe returns home and attempts to make a life as a businessman, but politics call once again. Briscoe quickly rises to the occasion and begins his political ascent to power. During this time, Briscoe also courts and marries a young woman named Lillian, whose father disapproves of the marriage. Includes commercials and promos.
