BARBRA: THE CONCERT (TV)

Summary

This special program showcases the talent of legendary singer Barbra Streisand in her first concert tour in twenty-eight years. The program features excerpts from her opening concert on New Year's Eve weekend 1993-1994 in Las Vegas, and her closing performance in July of 1994 at Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim, California. Streisand, backed by a sixty-four-piece orchestra, with musical arrangements by Marvin Hamlisch, performs in two segments, each beginning with documentary footage of the tour. Act One opens as Streisand performs "As If We Never Said Good-bye," and then introduces her mother, Diane Kind, from the audience. After a clip from opening night at the Cocoanut Grove in Los Angeles, Streisand sings "I'm Still Here," "Everybody Says Don't," and "Don't Rain on My Parade." Next, Streisand talks briefly about musical theater and sings "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man" from "Show Boat." After revealing that she had a crush on Marlon Brando upon seeing him in the film version of "Guys and Dolls," she sings a duet of the film's song "I'll Know" with his on-screen character. Next, she recalls her early career on the Broadway stage and sings "People" from her starring role in "Funny Girl." Streisand then muses about confiding in psychotherapists about her romantic relationships, and segues into the songs "Will He Like Me?," "He Touched Me," and "Evergreen." Next are clips from movies in which she appears in doctor-patient relationships; she then sings "The Man That Got Away" and "On a Clear Day." Act Two begins with clips from her films, "Funny Girl," "Yentl," and "The Way We Were," from which she performs the title song, followed by "You Don't Bring Me Flowers Anymore" and "Lazy Afternoon." Streisand then reminisces about being on tour in London, followed by comical footage of her first meeting with Prince Charles in 1972. Next, she introduces her son, Jason Gould, in the audience and sings "Not While I'm Around" to him, followed by "Ordinary Miracles." She then discusses making the movie "Yentl" and performs a medley of songs from the film. In a celebration of the presidency of Bill Clinton, Streisand sings "Happy Days Are Here Again," accompanied by footage of the administration's accomplishments. And, in a tribute to Fanny Brice, the program concludes with Streisand performing Brice's signature song, "My Man," followed by "For All We Know." Streisand then appears for an encore and sings "Somewhere" from "West Side Story."
