NYPD BLUE: E.R. {THIRD SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The third season premiere in this series of rough-edged police dramas about the cases and private lives of the detectives and station house personnel of a Manhattan precinct. In this episode, Detectives Medavoy and Martinez are on a morning call to check out a possible robbery in progress at a bar. When they enter the bar with their guns drawn, a man tells them he is a cop, and has a badge to prove it. Just as Martinez and Medavoy are putting away their guns, another man comes out of the back room shooting. A chase ensues which leaves Martinez shot and in serious condition. Meanwhile at the precinct, Detective Russell has been sober for a month and she wants Sipowicz to talk to Simone, her love interest, about their relationship. When word that Martinez has been shot gets out, the detectives mobilize to go after the shooter. They find him after a brief search, but they still don't know the identity of his partner. Before the gunman receives medical attention, the detectives use him to get to his partner. Complications arise with Martinez, and there is a possibility he may be paralyzed. Meanwhile, Sipowicz tells Simone that he and Russell should come over for dinner and Simone accepts the offer. The two detectives arrest the gunman's partner, who turns out to be a corrections officer, but before they can interview him, the district attorney steps in. It appears that the officer is a key informant to the district attorney's office on the drug infested prison system. Simone and Sipowicz can't accept that, considering what happened to Martinez, and Simone figures out a way to let the public know about what's going on. The district attorney is upset about the story appearing in the newspaper, but nevertheless agrees to let the detectives arrest the corrections officer and handle the case. The dinner that Sipowicz planned gets cancelled because Sylvia has some personal issues to discuss with Sipowicz. Includes commercials, promos, and public service announcements. This program is closed-captioned.

Cataloging of this program was made possible by the Bell Atlantic Foundation, 1998.
