NEW YORK ON FILM {ALAN AND SUSAN RAYMOND} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of interview programs profiling
filmmaking in New York City, hosted by Nancy
Littlefield, director of the Mayor's Office of Motion
Pictures and Television in New York City. In this
program, Littlefield speaks with filmmakers Alan and
Susan Raymond. As a married team of producers,
directors, and writers for public television
documentaries, the Raymonds are perhaps best known for
their creation of the series "An American Family."
Littlefield begins with the opening sequence from their
recent film, "Bad Boys," which focuses on juvenile
delinquents. The Raymonds discuss their use of
videotape versus film for certain projects in order to
create a more spontaneous feel, and the fact they handle
the responsibilities of an entire crew. Next is a clip
from their film, "Police Tapes," which follows the
operations of a police precinct in a crime-ridden area
of the Bronx; the film documents their response to a
stabbing and interviews with detectives and police
officers. The Raymonds discuss their impressions of the
police after spending time with them, the reactions of
both liberals and conservatives to the film, and their
desire to focus on police combat stress and feelings of
futility about urban decay. Next is another clip from
"Bad Boys," featuring an interview with a school
neighborhood worker about truancy and crime. According
to the Raymonds, the documentary follows troubled youth
through the penal system, presents youth crime as a
social rather than a criminal problem, and reveals the
importance of treating children's problems early before
they lead to serious crime. The final clip from "Bad
Boys" shows youths being admitted to a juvenile
detention center.
Cataloging of this program has been made possible by
Senator Roy M. Goodman, 1998/1999.
