WALL STREET WEEK {WALL $TREET WEEK} WITH LOUIS RUKEYSER {ELAINE GARZARELLI} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of stock market and financial analysis programs hosted by Louis Rukeyser. Rukeyser makes some opening comments about the following: the "schoolyard taunting match" being played by Congress and President Bill Clinton over whether to raise the debt limit; Colin Powell's shrewd decision to decline a presidential run; energy secretary Hazel O'Leary's hiring of private investigators to monitor reporters covering her department; and the predictable results, among higher earners, of the raised tax rates of 1993. Rukeyser then presents the Dow Jones and broader market indexes for the week of November 6-10, 1995. Next, Rukeyser is joined by the following panelists: Michael Holland, the chairman of an investment advisory firm; Laszlo Birinyi, the president of a money management firm; and John Dessauer, a newsletter publisher. The panelists discuss the following topics, among others: the disinflationary effect of the president's feud with Congress on the economy; the current state of technology stocks; the strength of the U.S. dollar abroad; and world markets which are currently attractive. Later, Rukeyser introduces a special segment as part of an ongoing celebration of the series's twenty-fifth anniversary: a behind the scenes look at how the show is put together at the Maryland Public Television studio in Owings Mills, Maryland, each week. Later, Rukeyser and the panel are joined by guest Elaine Garzarelli, president of Garzarelli Capital, Inc., who comments on the following topics, among others: her prediction of a fifteen to twenty percent rise in the market in the next year and a half; her contention that non-durables, such as food, tobacco, and alcohol, are the stocks of choice over the next six to nine months, followed by a move into early cyclicals, such as home-building and household appliances; her belief that inflation will not be a problem for several years; and specific stocks she favors at the moment.
