THIS IS AMERICA, CHARLIE BROWN: THE MUSIC AND HEROES OF AMERICA (TV)

Summary

One in this eight-part miniseries which stars the "Peanuts" characters as they are transported into the past and future to participate in various events in American history. In this episode, Lucy and Schroeder join together to give a report to the school on the music and heroes of America. The various characters perform musical selections throughout. Schroeder begins his report with Stephen Foster, composer of the song "Oh Susanna." Lucy then launches into her report, stating that men going to California during the Gold Rush of 1848 sang the song. Lucy explains that the Seneca Falls Convention, a conference to discuss voting rights for women led by Susan B. Anthony, was held in 1848. Schroeder next discusses battlefield songs such as "Yankee Doodle Dandy." He goes on to credit John Philip Sousa as the "march king of America." Lucy interrupts with a description of immigration, and Schroeder mentions immigrant composer Irving Berlin. Next, Franklin, an African-American character, describes the evolution of jazz through slave spirituals, funeral and parade songs, and ragtime. Lucy reports the accomplishments of famous African-American men such as Booker T. Washington, George Washington Carver, and W.E.B. DuBois. Lucy's report next incorporates a film strip with historical footage of jazz composers George Gershwin, Fats Waller, and Duke Ellington. Footage of President Dwight Eisenhower, Martin Luther King, Jr., and wounded Vietnam soldiers concludes the report. The program ends as Charlie Brown reflects on his favorite song, "Linus and Lucy," written by jazz musician Vince Guaraldi. Commercials deleted.
