Summary
One in this musical variety series hosted by the popular vocalist and pianist Nat "King" Cole, one of the first major black entertainers to host his own series. This program features the talents of "Jazz at the Philharmonic," which is led by Norman Granz. Musicians appearing with Jazz at the Philharmonic include: the members of the Oscar Peterson Trio (Oscar Peterson on piano; Ray Brown on bass; and Herb Ellis on guitar); Coleman Hawkins on tenor sax; Roy Eldridge on trumpet; Illinois Jacquet on sax; Flip Phillips on tenor sax; Jo Jones on drums; and Stan Getz on tenor sax. Highlights of this program include the following performances: Nat "King" Cole sings "It's Only a Paper Moon," which features Flip Phillips on sax; the Oscar Peterson Trio and Coleman Hawkins accompany Cole as he sings "Sweet Lorraine"; "C Jam Blues" is played by the Oscar Peterson Trio, Roy Eldridge, Illinois Jacquet, Flip Phillips, and Jo Jones (who uses his hands to play the drums); Stan Getz and Roy Eldridge join Cole, who plays the piano, for a rendition of "I Want to Be Happy"; Phillips and Jacquet accompany Cole as he sings "With You on My Mind"; a performance of "Stompin' at the Savoy"; and the Oscar Peterson Trio accompanies Cole as he sings "Tenderly." Includes a commercial for Rheingold beer, featuring a jingle performed by Cole.
