Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. Carson's opening monologue touches on the following topics, among others: the current world series, the difference between baseball fans on the East and West Coasts, Michael Dukakis's foundering campaign for the U.S. Presidency, and the uproar caused by Nancy Reagan's borrowing couture clothing from famous fashion designers. Next, Carson reads aloud a letter from an angry viewer, as well as humorous responses from Los Angeles schoolchildren to questions about the upcoming presidential election. Carson's first guest, Alice Chalifoux, an eighty-year-old harp teacher, discusses her interview in People magazine, the injuries that can develop while playing the harp incorrectly, her opinion about Harpo Marx's musical talent, and her career with the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra and the phenomenon of difficult conductors. Following this, four of her students from around the country play a quartet arrangement of "The Malagena." The next guest is comedienne/actress Whoopi Goldberg, who discusses her impulsiveness, the recent breakup of her marriage, and the problems inherent in relationships, after which Carson shows a clip from her upcoming movie, "Clara's Heart." They are then joined by comedian/actor Kevin Pollack, who talks about his new television series, "Coming of Age," and entertains the audience with impersonations of Peter Falk, Christopher Lloyd, Dudley Moore, William Shatner, Albert Brooks, and Woody Allen. Includes commercials and promos. Commercials include the Beach Boys for Delco electronics, Ed Begley, Jr., for Quaker 100% Natural Cereal, and Brad Pitt for Pringles potato chips.
