TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {BETTE DAVIS, PETE FOUNTAIN} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. On this program, the guests include actress Bette Davis and jazz clarinetist Pete Fountain. In his opening monologue, Carson comments on the following topics, among others: Jackie Presser's election as head of the Teamsters' Union; "Dynasty"'s cliffhanger episode in which John Forsythe strangles Joan Collins, and how it mirrors Carson's own bad marriages and bitter divorces; how Ronald and Nancy Reagan are out of touch with the poor; and the ridiculousness of California's many propositions during election season. Carson then chats with Ed McMahon about the World Status Map published by the U.S. State Department to warn American tourists about trouble spots around the globe, and shares with him a similar study done by "The Tonight Show"'s own resident travel advisory authority, Monte Zuma. The first guest, Bette Davis, models the dress designed by Nolan Miller that she wore to France recently when accepting the Legion of Honor and Caesar awards. Carson reenacts the famous scene from "Now Voyager" in which Paul Henreid lights two cigarettes simultaneously and passes one to Davis. Davis talks about the terrible rumors spread about how difficult she was to work with in Hollywood; the history behind the famous phrases, "Peter, Peter, Peter" and "What a dump"; her belief that she should have won Oscars for her roles in "Dark Victory," "All About Eve," and "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?"; her dislike of her role in "Beyond the Forest"; her unhappiness with nudity in contemporary films; how she fell in love, not with her leading men, but with strong, domineering directors; how she lost her virginity and why she married the wrong people; her love for her ex-husband Gary Merrill; her surprise at how good a president Ronald Reagan was; and her commiseration with Carson on alimony payments to spouses. Next, clarinet Pete Fountain, accompanied by the NBC Orchestra, plays a medley of jazz pieces. Includes commercials and promos.
