TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {DENNIS HART, JOE PISCOPO, ELLEN DEGENERES} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. On this program, the guests include parking ticket protester Dennis Hart, comedian Joe Piscopo, and comedienne Ellen DeGeneres. In his opening monologue, Carson comments on the following topics, among others: telling a few "leftover" jokes on the day after Thanksgiving; why he had the best Thanksgiving ever; how President Ronald Reagan spent the holiday; developments in the Iran-Contra scandal; the "new Nicaraguan restaurant" in Burbank; the controversial colorization of classic black-and-white movies such as "It's A Wonderful Life"; the upcoming Christmas season; and the hottest-selling dolls of this holiday season. Next, Carson enters the studio audience to meet some audience members, learn about them, and provide free dinners. Carson's first guest, Dennis Hart of Wildwood, New Jersey, joins him to touch on such topics as: disputing a ticket he received from parking -- at 1:30 p.m. -- at a parking meter that read "quarters only: 8 a.m. to 12 p.m."; going to court over the ticket and feeling humiliated by the judge; when 12 p.m. actually occurs; intentionally getting a second ticket so he could launch an appeal; and awaiting the Superior Court's verdict on his case. Then, Carson discusses a survey the show conducted with the Royal Greenwich Observatory in London to determine when 12 p.m. actually occurs. Next, Joe Piscopo performs a Bruce Springsteen-inspired parody song about New Jersey. Piscopo then sits down with Carson to touch on such topics as: what Springsteen thinks of his send-up; how difficult it is to perform with the energy of Springsteen; how he got in such good shape; learning some fitness tips from Sylvester Stallone; and other impressions he does. Then, Piscopo breaks into an impression of late-night talk show host David Letterman. Piscopo further discusses his home state of New Jersey and the jokes people often make at its expense. Finally, Ellen DeGeneres takes the stage to riff on such topics as: how she's been keeping in shape; how everyone in her family looks younger than they really are; whether she was funny as a child; what she got from her father when, as a child, she asked for a "dolly"; and what God might say were DeGeneres to call him on the phone. Afterward, DeGeneres briefly sits down with Carson to discuss how her comedy career is going, as well as why it's tougher for women to succeed in comedy. Includes commercials.
