TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JOHNNY CARSON, THE {GARY BUSEY, ROSEANNE BARR, STEVE TROTTER} (TV)

Summary

One in this series of late-night talk/variety programs hosted by Johnny Carson. On this program, the guests include comedienne Roseanne Barr, actor Gary Busey, and daredevil Steve Trotter. In his opening monologue, Carson comments on the following topics, among others: what the "Tonight Show" theme was originally used for; how to differentiate a Friday night crowd from others; the show now being broadcast in stereo; Burbank celebrities; what would cause an 82-year-old man to breakdance; "Rambo"; what televangelist Jerry Falwell is currently up to; baseball scandals; and "Boom Boom" Mancini's retirement from boxing. Next, Carson discusses Ed McMahon's lengthy career on television before playing some "clever" answering machine messages. Carson's first guest, Gary Busey, touches on such topics as: his work in "The Buddy Holly Story"; his rock 'n' roll background; growing up in Texas; whether he prefers acting or music; gaining or losing weight for specific parts; his interesting claim to fame as related to "Gunsmoke"; his new movie "Insignificance"; and his hobby of surfing. Next, Roseanne Barr takes the stage to riff on such topics as: how housewives never get to do anything fun; why she doesn't like the term "housewife"; her "second career"; her impression of Barbra Streisand; how "fat people" give directions; why "fat moms" are better than "skinny moms"; what Stephen King's new book should be about; and what bugs her about her husband. Next, Steve Trotter joins Carson. A clip is shown of the 22-year-old daredevil plunging over Niagara Falls in his self-designed barrel. Trotter then touches on such topics as: how long the drop over the falls is; what caused him to sustain an injury; how his barrel was designed; the legalities of his stunt; whether he was scared by the descent; his dream of being a professional stuntman; and how his mother feels about his stunt. Also, McMahon does an in-studio commercial for Alpo dog food. Includes commercials.
