This edition, part two of two, examines the various methods employed by parents and community organizations to keep children off drugs and alcohol. Topics discussed include the following: the biggest challenge in educating children about the dangers of drugs; government efforts to stop the heavy influx of drugs into the country; the amount of additional money spent on law enforcement agents who specialize in fighting drugs; the tactics used by police officers and parents in a Rhode Island town to determine which children are using drugs or alcohol; the precautionary methods taken by many parents in the town to deter children from using drugs; the children's feelings about their parents being over-protective; what some parents do when they plan to be away from home for extended periods of time; the belief among some parents that returing to strong family values can change children's attitudes towards partying; tensions between the students who use drugs and alcohol and those who don't; whether experimenting with drugs is part of growing up; the attempt by schools to teach children how to avoid peer pressure and to reject drugs and alcohol; the efficacy of expensive and time-consuming methods of drug education; executives in the clothing business who have been doing public service announcements about drug prevention because the clothes appeal to children; why it can be harmful to use a celebrity with a prior history of drug addiction for the announcements; the use of older children to teach younger ones about drugs and alcohol; counselors who use exercises to make the mind stronger; parents who have gone back to school to learn how to educate their own children; and how the methods used in prevention are based solely on personal beliefs.
