ABC NEWS NIGHTLINE: AMERICA IN BLACK AND WHITE {PART 4 OF 5} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of nightly news programs. This program is part four of a special, five-part series presented by "Nightline," entitled "America in Black and White." In this program, Ted Koppel poses the question, "What percentage of Americans are black?" and discusses the topic toward the end of the program. In the meantime, Koppel relates viewers' on-line, negative responses to the special series thus far. Next, in a clip from 1970, anti-racism advocate Jane Elliott, a white woman, teaches her third-grade class a lesson in racism; Elliott performs the same exercise with adults in a clip from 1995. Koppel then speaks with Elliott about her definition of racism and how it can be abolished. Bob Woodson, an African-American who works for the National Center for Neighborhood Enterprise, relates his opinion of Elliott's attitude and offers his own opinion about racism. Next, the program features clips from discussions that are scheduled to appear in more detail the following night. In these discussions, a group of African-Americans talk to Koppel in one room while a racially diverse group watches and listens to the comments in another room. Then Koppel talks with the multicultural group while the African-Americans watch and listen. In these clips, various African-Americans prove that sometimes a sense of humor can help a person endure a racist incident. Includes comments by the Rev. Joseph Lowery of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Includes commercials, promos, and public service announcements.
Cataloging of this program was made possible by The Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation, 1997.
