LIFE'S WORK: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The pilot in this comedy series about the hectic life of Baltimore mother, wife, and assistant state's attorney, Lisa Hunter. This episode begins on Lisa's first day of work as she questions her husband Kevin as to whether her outfit looks properly professional. Meanwhile, young daughter Tess and toddler son Griffin voice their own needs. Then, Kevin, a basketball coach, reveals that he has walk-on tryouts and must be at the gym by 7 p.m., meaning that Lisa must retrieve the kids before that time. Later that morning, Lisa drops Griffin off at preschool and meets his teacher Emily before getting into a squabble with a bullying child. Later, she tearfully says goodbye to her son. Arriving at her new office, Lisa meets her colleagues, including rude Dee Dee Lucas and cocky Lyndon Knox. Then, Lisa meets office manager Matt Youngster. He takes her to her work station, which doesn't even have a desk. Afterward, Lisa meet deputy division chief Jerome Nash, who reveals that she wasn't his first choice for the job. Lisa questions if Mr. Nash is mistreating her due to her gender, right before she's assigned to a case with less than a day to prepare. She immediately begins an antagonistic relationship with Lyndon. After missing her deadline with Kevin, Lisa lobbies -- unsuccessfully -- to have the case moved back. At the tryouts, Kevin tries hard to watch Tess and Griffin by himself. Afterward, Lisa tries to handle business over the phone while her family returns home, unintentionally disrupting her work. Kevin has to go to the emergency room after one of his players gets injured, forcing Lisa to haul the children to a bar she needs to visit for some pre-trial information. At the bar, Lisa speaks with the loopy bartender to try and get some facts for her drunk driving case. There, she runs into Lyndon schmoozing up the room, and gleefully explaining why the bartender is an unreliable witness. The next day, Lisa is late to court and ultimately ends up losing her first case. Afterward, Lyndon taunts her, thinking she can't "swim with the big boys." Regardless, a new case is assigned to her. That evening, Kevin frets that Lisa's career is only going to make their lives more difficult, making them decide to take one day at a time. Includes commercials.
