20/20 {MARGOT KIDDER'S SECRET; LAWLESS IN THE AIR; BEWARE THE AIRBAG} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of news magazine programs. This edition, hosted by Hugh Downs and Barbara Walters, includes an interview with actress Margot Kidder, stories of unruly airplane passengers, and a look at the safety of automobile airbags. In the first segment, "Margot Kidder's Secret," Walters interviews Kidder about the following topics: the amount of time that she has been manic depressive; her current mood, especially after her recent manic episode became worldwide news; her description of mood swings; and the way she was able to hide her disease for so long. Next, manic depression specialist and sufferer Dr. Kay Redfield Jamison talks about the impact of the disease; warning signs that a mood swing is approaching; and whether she ever considered suicide. Kidder's daughter, Maggie, comments on her relatively normal childhood and her biggest fear about her mother's condition. Kidder then remarks on the following: whether she suffered from bouts with the disease while filming "Superman"; whether excessive drinking and drug use were attempts to cover up the disease; recollections about her most recent bout; what she did for money, food, and shelter during the five days she was reported missing; her discovery in the backyard of a suburban home; and her activities since her condition was made public. The next segment, "Lawless in the Air," reported by Lynn Sherr, examines accounts of unruly passengers. Topics discussed include: how pilots can leave the cockpit to intercede between flight attendants and passengers; flight attendants' unusual experiences, a few of which made headlines; unscheduled emergency landings to restrain unruly passengers; changes in perceptions of flight attendants over the years; comments by flight attendants Shelia Fraites, Gail Scott, Mark Savage, Christopher Huelshorst, and Michelle Morris on the lasting effects of certain incidents; and the reason airlines can be partially blamed for passengers' built-up frustrations. The last segment, "Beware the Airbag," reported by Arnold Diaz, examines the questionable safety of airbags in automobiles. Topics discussed include: the harm that airbags have caused to children in passenger seats; warnings about riding with children in the front seat; and technical advancements by automobile makers to increase passenger safety. Includes commercials, promos and public service announcements. Commercials include Cindy Crawford for Revlon Color Stay lipstick, John Lithgow for Discover credit cards, and Adam Wylie for Pizza Hut restaurants. This program is closed-captioned.
