CHICAGO HOPE: OUT OF AFRICA {THIRD SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The third season premiere in this series of medical dramas about the personal and professional lives of the staff of the state-of-the-art Chicago Hope Hospital and the ethical dilemmas they face. As the episode opens, Dr. Watters is disappointed to learn that the hospital has been sold to Tommy Wilmette for financial reasons, and he holds Dr. Shutt responsible for selling out to the conglomerate. Also, Wilmette's wife, Dr. Kathryn Austin, is arrested for kidnapping their daughter. And Dr. Dennis Hancock, who had been shot in the hospital's parking garage, undergoes a successful lung surgery, performed by Dr. Underhill, one of the hospital's new residents. Meanwhile, Dr. Grad and Dr. Kronk travel to a remote African village on "vacation" and wind up performing a life-saving operation on a child in the midst of difficult conditions. Back at Chicago Hope, Nyland's replacement, Dr. Keith Wilkes, tells Austin and Nyland that their privileges have been suspended for past offenses. Meanwhile, Austin's father is admitted to the hospital for a heart condition; months earlier he had been in need of bypass surgery, but as a Christian Scientist, he refused medical treatment and now the damage is evident. And when a judge denies Dr. Austin request to have unsupervised visits with her daughter, in desperation she takes leave of absence from Chicago Hope to move in with her father and monitor his declining condition. As the program concludes, Wilmette confides to Shutt that the future of the hospital is in jeopardy. Commercials deleted.
