NEW SHOW, THE {JOHN CANDY, KEVIN KLINE, GILDA RADNER} (TV)
Summary
One in this short-lived series of sketch comedy programs. This edition features actor Kevin Kline, comedians Gilda Radner and John Candy, and musical guest David Johansen (performing as Buster Poindexter). Highlights include the following: Gilda Radner introduces her dog to the studio audience and launches into a quasi-ventriloquist act with the tiny canine, but is cut short by cast regular Dave Thomas when she attempts to do some irreverent "Saturday Night Live"-style humor; in several continuing black-and-white film segments presented throughout the program, Kevin Kline tries to hustle Minnesota Fats (Candy) in a spoof of the 1961 movie classic, "The Hustler"; post office customer Radner is subjected to a brutal backroom interrogation by postal workers Thomas and Candy when she attempts to mail an inadequately addressed package; an "Olympic Moment" features Radner and Kline as a pair of figure skaters from a small, impoverished Soviet country who do their best without money, training, or skates; in "Weekend Tonight" -- a regular news/interview segment co-hosted by Buck Henry and Thomas -- sportscaster John Madden (Candy) shows his unique appreciation for great art, Liberace (Thomas) leads a tour of his enormous closet, Candy appears as the "Bob's Big Boy" character mourning the death of McDonald's founder Ray Kroc, and (in manipulated actual news footage) Walter Mondale appears to sing a calypso number during a presidential panel debate; Buster Poindexter and the Banshees of Blue perform a song; in "Den of Revulsion," Radner, Kline, Thomas, and Valri Bromfield are revolted by seemingly everything; and in a parody of the popular night-time serials of the era, the cast appear as "The Muensters," a powerful, back-stabbing Wisconsin cheese dynasty. Commercials deleted.
