CHARLIE ROSE {RUDOLPH GIULIANI} (TV)
Summary
One in this series of talk shows hosted by Charlie Rose. In this program, Rose interviews New York City Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani during his second term in office. The mayor begins by explaining his determination to keep both the Yankees and the New York Stock Exchange in the city, and he muses on the good working relationship he has with Governor George Pataki, based on their similar political philosophies. Giuliani outlines his program to end the city's welfare system by the year 2000, stressing his desire to change a program based on ingrained dependency to one that enables people to help themselves. He defines the proudest achievements of his first term to be returning a positive spirit to New York City, creating a healthy financial climate, and lowering the crime rate. Giuliani then responds to comments made by Rose about his public image as an autocrat, his reluctance to debate, and his policy on jaywalking. The mayor also addresses the topics of increased traffic and rebuilding the city's infrastructure -- and the criticism that his goal to abolish welfare is really a ploy to win Republican-Party support in an upcoming national election. Giuliani further comments on his love of opera and the way in which his personality can negatively influence some citizens. He goes on to examine Kenneth Starr's investigation of Bill Clinton, and to reveal his impressions of both Clinton and Ronald Reagan. Giuliani ends the interview by defining his goals for his second term and by stressing the importance of civility in a large metropolitan area.
