PRIDE AND PREJUDICE {PART 6 OF 6} (TV)
Summary
Part six in this six-part miniseries, based on Jane Austen's classic 1813 novel about divisiveness amongst the classes in 19th century England and the love between Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy. The program begins with Mrs. Bennet tickled that Lydia is to finally marry George. However, she is angry that they will not marry in Longbourn and at how Mr. Gardiner handled the situation. Jane and Lizzy try to make her see reason, stating that their uncle must have laid out considerable money to erase George's debts. Later, Mr. Bennet talks with Lizzy, revealing that Mr. Gardiner must have paid the "worthless" George at least 10,000 pounds. Mr. Bennet blames himself for not having sired a male heir and for not having saved well enough to take care of his wife and daughters. Soon, Lydia and George marry and he is assigned to a military regiment in Newcastle. Mr. Bennet claims that Lydia and George will never again be welcome at Longbourn. However, one day they do arrive at the estate. The cocky Lydia now thinks that her sisters envy her as the first married, but Lizzy insists that is not the case.
Then, Lydia spills a secret: that Mr. Darcy was a groomsman at her wedding. The shocked Lizzy learns through Mrs. Gardiner that Mr. Darcy remedied Lydia's dilemma and paid off George's debts, while forcing Mr. Gardiner to take the credit. Later, Lizzy and George take a walk together, during which Lizzy tells him that she now understands what really happened between him and Mr. Darcy. Following Lydia's departure for "the north country," word arrives that Charles is heading back to Netherfield. Mrs. Bennet is upset that Charles has been in town for three days without calling on them. Then, Charles and Mr. Darcy suddenly arrive at Longbourn. Afterward, Jane tells Lizzy that she finally feels at ease around Charles, able to meet as "indifferent acquaintances." Meanwhile, Charles is furious to learn that Mr. Darcy never told him of Jane's presence in London. Mr. Darcy admits that he was in the wrong, apologizing for his behavior. Charles asks for Mr. Darcy's blessing in pursuing Jane, which is quickly given. Then, Charles again visits the Bennet clan, eventually revealing his love for Jane and asking her to be his wife. Jane happily accepts.
Later, an enormous carriage arrives at Longbourn, carrying Lady Catherine. She marches into the Bennet home, wanting to take "a turn" with Lizzy. While on the walk, Catherine tells Lizzy of an "alarming" report that Lizzy is to be married to Darcy. Catherine is livid, thinking their alliance would be a disgrace, and stating that Mr. Darcy is to marry her daughter, Anne. While Lizzy is shocked by the news, she confirms that she is not engaged, but refuses Catherine's demand that she never marry Mr. Darcy. Catherine is appalled at Lizzy's response, and leaves in a huff. Later, Mr. Bennet tells Lizzy that he has just received a letter from William, warning -- and cautioning against -- a union between Lizzy and Mr. Darcy. Soon, Charles and Mr. Darcy again visit Longbourn and Mr. Darcy takes Lizzy on a walk. Lizzy reveals to Mr. Darcy that she knows about his kindness toward Lydia and thanks him for his generosity. Then, Mr. Darcy proposes yet again to Lizzy and this time she accepts. Mr. Darcy thanks Lizzy for eliminating his pride. Mr. Bennet makes sure that Lizzy is certain of her love for Mr. Darcy, which she confirms. The program ends with the dual weddings of Jane and Charles and Lizzy and Mr. Darcy, attended by all but Catherine, Anne, Lydia, and George.
