MUSEUM OF TELEVISION & RADIO SCREENING SERIES, THE: MURDER IN THE LIVING ROOM: HITCHCOCK BY HITCHCOCK, PACKAGE 5: THE ROALD DAHL CONNECTION

Summary

"The Roald Dahl Connection" Author of such children's classics as "James and the Giant Peach" and "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," Roald Dahl began writing short stories as a diplomat in the early forties. With their devious wit and unexpected twists, tales like "Man from the South" and "The Landlady" greatly appealed to Hitchcock; in all, he would direct four of the six Dahl stories adapted for the series. "Alfred Hitchcock Presents: 'Lamb to the Slaughter'" with Barbara Bel Geddes and Allan Lane; written by Roald Dahl (1958; 25 minutes) Dahl has fun linking food and death as neglected housewife Barbara Bel Geddes has just the recipe for a leftover murder weapon. "Alfred Hitchcock Presents: 'Dip in the Pool'" with Keenan Wynn and Fay Wray; written by Robert C. Dennis from a story by Roald Dahl (1958; 25 minutes) Vacationing gambler Keenan Wynn goes a little overboard when his fellow passengers begin betting on how far their cruise ship will travel in the next day. (Look for Hitch's only television cameo: on the face of a magazine, ‡ la his sea-bound film, "Lifeboat.")

"Alfred Hitchcock Presents: 'Mrs. Bixby and the Colonel's Coat'" with Audrey Meadows and Les Tremayne; written by Halsted Welles from a story by Roald Dahl (1960; 25 minutes) "The Honeymooners"'s Audrey Meadows plays against type as the cunning, unfaithful wife of the title, but, as is usually the case with the amoral denizens of Dahl's universe, her lechery is reciprocated in a totally unexpected way.
