PORT CHARLES: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The premiere of this daytime serial -- a spin-off of the long-running series "General Hospital" -- this drama focuses on a new generation of interns at Port Charles University's Medical School. As the program opens, Lucy learns she is pregnant and, on her way to tell Kevin the good news, she gets stuck in the elevator due to a power outage. Back in Canada, her ex-husband, Scott, discovers that their daughter, Serena, has been kidnapped from school. Suspecting Lucy is involved, he flies back to Port Charles to confront her. That same day, the hospital's new staff of interns -- Chris, Joe, Karen, Julie, Matt, Jake, and Eve -- prepare to attend a cocktail party in their honor. When they arrive at the festivities, they find only one person, Greg Cooper, who was discharged from the program a week earlier for hiding a long history of emotional instability. Angry and hurt over his fate, Cooper launches an ambush against his competition: he locks the door, holds them hostage with a semi-automatic weapon, and plans to torment them with secret information he has gleaned from files on each person. Heroically, Joe manages to secretly page his brother Frank, an emergency medical technician, who notifies chief resident Dr. Faulk and nurse Audrey Hardy. Faulk and Audrey break into the room, but Cooper shoots Faulk dead and knocks Audrey unconscious. The interns, led by Joe, are forced to perform a crude and dangerous cranial operation with a power drill to save Audrey's life. Karen also concocts an ingenious scheme to buy the captives some time. And Lucy is in danger since, whenever she makes a sound, Cooper gets spooked and shoots at the elevator. After she escapes through the roof hatch, the elevator falls and she clings to the beams in the shaft for support. Once Kevin learns of her whereabouts, he convinces Frank to help rescue her. Help arrives once electrical power is restored -- but Lucy is arrested for kidnapping her own daughter, and Joe faces an investigation by the medical review board for the surgery he performed on Audrey. Includes commercials, promos, and public service announcements. Public service announcements include Vikki Carr for NHLIC/National Cancer Institute.
(This premiere episode was telecast in prime time, and the show then appeared regularly as a daytime serial.)
