STEPHEN KING'S THE SHINING {PART 3 OF 3} (TV)
Summary
Part three in this three-part miniseries, based on Stephen King's novel of the same name, about a troubled man and his family who become caretakers of the haunted Overlook Hotel during its winter shutdown. This part begins with Danny playing outside in the snow while Wendy is trapped in Stuart's office. The topiary lions come alive and creep toward Danny. Meanwhile, Wendy breaks out of the office to go rescue Danny. Hearing her screams from the basement, Jack joins her and they find Danny safe. However, Wendy notes that the nearby topiary lions have no snow on them, unlike everything else in sight.
That night, Wendy is awakened by voices that seem to be coming from a party. She and Jack go to investigate and end up in a fight. They find the elevator seemingly short-circuited but Wendy investigates further and finds some party artifacts in it. Later, Danny comes upon a key to a cuckoo clock and winds the antique mechanism, setting off visions of the masquerade ball. Danny goes into a state and finds himself traveling the halls of the Overlook as Jack pursues him with a mallet. Snapping out of his dream, Danny again begins seeing "REDRUM" on the wall, watching as it reverses itself to "MURDER." Down in Miami, Dick is struck by Danny calling for him and knows he must travel back to Denver. However, he misses the last flight out, with the next plane scheduled for the following morning. Back at the Overlook, Jack continues searching through papers in the cellar. He feels in need of a whiskey and a voice advises him to go to the lounge for a drink on the house. On January 5, "the last day" arrives, and Jack finds himself in the lounge playing some Big Band music on the jukebox. Danny has a vision of his father drinking and goes to find him, but his pursuit is interrupted by a mask-wearing ghost. Danny yet again shines for Dick, who checks that his 12:10 flight to Denver is on schedule. Meanwhile, in the lounge, Jack drinks some whiskey before a bartender materializes in the form of Delbert Grady. Jack tells Delbert that he has a lot of "lost time" to make up for on the drinking front. Later, Danny informs his mother that Jack is now drinking.
In the ballroom, Jack mingles with the ghostly guests and meets an attractive woman, the spirit of Horace Derwent's girlfriend. Then, Jack sees Horace and goes back to Delbert for a fresh drink. Delbert comments to Jack about his "delicate position" at the Overlook and tells him that the "naughty" Danny is trying to bring Dick back to the hotel. Meanwhile, Dick has made it to Colorado and drives toward his destination. At the same time, Wendy walks the Overlook alone, wielding a knife. She comes upon Jack behind the bar. He jumps up and attacks her, asking why she has been trying to thwart him. Danny distracts Jack and is injured by his father, who then is knocked out by Wendy. Danny thinks it's all his fault for "waking up the ghosts." He claims they are getting stronger and that they will discard Jack once they no longer need him. Wendy and Danny drag the unconscious Jack to the freezer, locking him inside. Jack finally regains consciousness, furious and claiming that his family will pay dearly once he escapes. Meanwhile, Dick procures a snow tank to head toward the Overlook, with a gas station attendant thinking him crazy.
Still locked in the freezer, Jack begins hearing Delbert again, who says he'll open the door if he'll kill Wendy and Danny. Minutes later, Wendy walks through the hotel, coming back to the freezer and startled to find that Jack has escaped. She sees "REDRUM" written on a door, then written again on a mirror in the lounge as she becomes increasingly frantic and the ghosts begin to menace her. Then, Jack emerges, confronting his wife and knocking a knife from her hand. Jack takes a swing at Wendy with his croquet mallet before hitting her in the gut. Jack looks like he's about to finish off Wendy, causing her to yell for Danny to run and hide. Jack uses his mallet on Wendy again before she is able to make a small escape. She throws a croquet ball at Jack's head, debilitating him, and enabling her to flee. She locks herself in their living quarters and Jack pursues her, smashing one door after another with the mallet until she's in the bathroom and can go no further. Then, Delbert interrupts and informs Jack that Dick is arriving and needs to be "handled." Jack subsequently meets Dick as he enters and quickly dispatches of him. Then, Delbert and Horace urge Jack to now take care of Danny. Jack leaves Wendy, who's gone to the unconscious Dick, and runs upstairs to find his son. Upon seeing him, Jack prepares to show him who's boss. However, Danny is no longer scared of Jack, realizing that "it's the hotel talking." Meanwhile, Wendy gets Dick to awaken. Danny's courage seems to snap Jack out of his madness and bring him back to normal.
Normalcy is short-lived, though, as the demons take over Jack once again. After Danny tells him that boiler needs to be attended, Jack sprints toward the cellar to stop the faulty tank from exploding. Dick hurries Wendy and Danny from the Overlook. Jack gets to the boiler room to stop the rising temperature gauge as Delbert and Horace urge him to prevent his family from exiting the Overlook. When in a moment of clarity, Jack refuses, the two ghosts try to take control of the situation. With an assist from Danny's shine, Jack prevails, giving Wendy, Danny, and Dick time to reach the snow tank. Just then, the clock strikes midnight and the hotel starts to explode. Dick drives Wendy and Danny away as the Overlook blows and Jack perishes. Ten years later, Danny graduates from high school in front of Wendy and Dick. There, Dick asks Wendy how she is doing and she tells him about her new art gallery. As Danny's name is called to get his diploma, the eighteen-year-old Daniel Anthony Torrance walks across the stage, having grown up into the body of "Tony." While looking into the audience, Danny sees Jack's ghost, allowing the two to finally say a teary goodbye. Finally, back in Colorado, plans are under way for the Overlook to be rebuilt, with the ghostly voices excited about having a new home. Includes commercials.
