Summary
A German-language film produced by ARTE, the French-German cultural channel which provides innovative programming for the European community. Charming, headstrong Holly spends the eve of her wedding in the company of her ex-boyfriend, Freddie, a struggling songwriter, while her loutish fiance, Karl, spends the night drinking with his friends. Holly and Freddie chance upon a desperate, pregnant illegal alien from Africa named Alemnesch, who hides in Freddie's car as she goes into labor. Holly and Freddie care for and shelter the African refugee and her baby, while the romantic ties between the reunited lovers and Karl, the furious fiance, become messy and entangled. Freddie eventually decides the only way to ensure the safety of Alemnesch and the baby is to marry her and grant her citizenship. The complicated relationships are resolved to everyone's satisfaction as Freddie develops strong feelings for Alemnesch and the baby. Events take a tragic turn, however, when Freddie and Alemnesch encounter harsh, unyielding bureaucracy in their attempt to marry.
