EX {IN GERMAN WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES} (TV)

Summary

A German-language film produced by ARTE, the French-German cultural channel which provides innovative programming for the European community. This drama follows a tight-knit group of disaffected twentysomethings in contemporary Berlin. Klaus, Mario, and his girlfriend, Sarah, are shaken by the death of Klaus's brother, Stefan, who has perished in a high-speed car chase with the police. The trio retreat into their routine of taking drugs and stealing cars, which they race for money and thrills. They are joined by a newcomer named Robert who, unlike the others, is quiet and self-assured, and he lacks the unfocused rage and self-destructive bravado of Mario, the gang's increasingly paranoid leader. Sarah and Robert develop an instant and obvious attraction, sending the jealous Mario into a frenzy of drug consumption and feverish schemes. Mario begins stealing cars for the gangster Vladimir, who arms the unbalanced young man with weapons. When Mario panics and kills one of Vladimir's henchmen in a bungled sale, he draws Klaus, Sarah, and Robert into a desperate flight from Vladimir's vengeance. The drama concludes as the once-playful pursuit of drugs, cars, and speed becomes tragically serious. This program is closed-captioned.
