Summary
One in this series of dramas that deals with the investigation, arrest, and prosecution of criminals. The first half of each episode concerns the police procedure that leads to the arrest of a suspect, while the second half covers the efforts of the district attorney to prosecute the case. In this episode, a woman is found shot dead in bed next to her alcoholic husband. Detectives Briscoe and Curtis question the husband about the incident but he can't remember anything because of his state of mind. The autopsy reveals a bullet lodged in the body, and it is determined that the shot was fired from a distance. A forensic test concludes that the bullet came from the rooftop of the building across the street. Evidence turns up on that rooftop and the superintendent's son says he saw some people on the roof around the time of the shooting. Briscoe and Curtis canvas the neighborhood and come up with the name and address of Lonnie Rickman. They pay a visit to the Rickman apartment and run into Lonnie's mother Cassie. They order her to summon her son home for an emergency which she does reluctantly. Lonnie cops an attitude with the detectives, giving Briscoe the feeling that Lonnie is definitely the shooter. They then speak with the parents of one of Lonnie's friends who insist that Lonnie has pushed their son into dealing drugs and skipping school. While Briscoe and Curtis question Lonnie's friend, Clayton, Lieutenant Van Buren intercedes and demands that the youngster tell everything he knows about Lonnie and the night of the shooting. The name of Ross Morales, a known drug dealer, comes up. The detectives set up a stakeout for Ross and Lonnie and have to use force to apprehend Ross. Lonnie claims that Ross had nothing to do with the shooting which means that Lonnie will be tried for second degree murder. A court psychiatrist determines that Lonnie was abused by his drug-addicted mother, but nonetheless has taken care of her through thick and thin. Meanwhile, Clayton tells Kincaid how and why Ross controls Lonnie and leading her to believe that Ross should be the one on trial. Ross's attorney sets a motion to have his client released and McCoy drums up some sort of separate case against Ross in order for him to be held accountable for the shooting. However, Cassie admits that she gave Ross permission to have custody over Lonnie because of her drug-addiction and lack of parental knowledge. McCoy then decides to show Lonnie how his mother really feels about him, which leads Lonnie to testify about how Ross treated him and the death threats he made to Cassie. Commercials deleted.
